Boson x speed run4/30/2023 ![]() Geon makes sure to incorporate all of these types of energy platforms: ones that hang in the air, ones that connect at the front to regular platforms, ones that connect at the back, and so on.Īs your energy climbs in a level, the speed of the game will gradually increase. Of course, if the start and/or end of an energy platform lies flush with a regular platform, the respective optimizations are much easier. You want to land on them as soon as possible without going too soon (because then you’d hit your shins, ouch) and you want to jump off as late as possible (again, without overdoing it, because if you miss the jump you’re probably gonna fall into the void). There’s further optimization which has to do with when you drop onto an energy platform and when you jump off of it. In Geon there are numerous energy platforms of varying sizes littered throughout the level, which you can go for if you want, but it’s pretty much impossible to ever get all of them, meaning that you’re quickly taught to pick and choose which ones to try and reach. Because your score increasing is conditional (only goes up on cyan platforms), as opposed to, say, the passing of time, you can take measures to optimize how much energy you’re collecting, or, in other words, how much time you’re spending on the cyan platforms. This allows Geon to ease you into what sets Boson X apart from many other hexagonlikes: risk vs reward. Instead of corralling you down into a specific lane and then throwing a series of precise jumps at you, you’re presented with a lot of options for how you want to move through the level. The “patterns” (set pieces of platforms and other objects) in Geon are of a very open-ended nature. You win upon reaching “100%” energy, which also results in the level’s color scheme and music shifting. Smacking into a wall or falling out of the map causes you to game over. Jumping left or right, in addition to working like an ordinary jump, shifts you over one “lane”, of which there are 10 that loop around, forming a sort of decagonal tube. Holding your jump button allows you to sort of float for a rather long distance, but it peters out eventually. There are effectively 3 controls: jumping left, jumping right, and jumping straight ahead. To briefly get into that, this game is an endless runner where you accrue points by running on these cyan energy platforms. It’s a very slow-paced, forgiving level that is meant to ease you into the controls and premise of Boson X. I’m honestly kind of obsessed with it, which is why I’ve decided to write a rundown/review of all 18 of its levels here on Cohost. What I didn’t mention was the fact that Boson X is one of my favorite video games of all time. In that post, the only special attention I gave it was to say that it is my personal favorite instance of this sub-genre. ![]() ![]() I briefly mentioned Boson X in a previous chost of mine about a sub-genre that I came up with to describe certain types of games, that being the “hexagonlike” (named for Super Hexagon). ![]()
